Opening Utrecht's underground waste containers
Most underground containers open without a pass. Where one is needed, an OV-chipkaart, contactless bank card or NFC phone does the job.

- Eligibility
- Almost all underground containers open without a pass. A card is needed only where the waste is compressed, where business waste is monitored, where streams such as food waste and textiles must stay separate, or where a container is reserved for businesses.
- Appointments
- Hold almost any card with an RFID chip against the reader: an OV-chipkaart, a contactless bank card, or a phone with NFC switched on. Not every container accepts phones. For food-waste (gfe) containers the gemeente says it stores no card numbers or personal data and does not track how often you use them; if you would still rather not use your own card, request a separate afvalpas by emailing gfe@utrecht.nl. Questions go to 14 030, or +31 30 286 00 00 and press 1 for English. The container rules themselves are published in Dutch only.
Why it is included
The municipality's own rules for the containers every Utrecht household uses. Newcomers often assume they must get a waste pass first, and usually they don't.
