Bernadottelaan work due to finish in October as five street sections wait

Utrecht expects the remaining Bernadottelaan and Trumanlaan phases to finish by October 2026, while five other street sections await revised plans after unexpected underground utilities were found.

Work on the remaining sections of Bernadottelaan and Trumanlaan in Utrecht's Kanaleneiland neighbourhood is expected to finish in September or October 2026. Five other street sections will be completed later because underground cables and pipes were found in different positions than the municipality had expected.

What is being rebuilt

The wider project concerns sections of Bernadottelaan, Bevinlaan, Nansenlaan, De Gasperilaan, Rooseveltlaan and Marshalllaan, as well as Trumanlaan between Bevinlaan and Churchilllaan. The municipality says the aim is to make streets narrower, pedestrian crossings safer and the neighbourhood greener and better prepared for the future.

The plans include a separated sewer system for rainwater and wastewater, additional trees and planted areas, and tree pits that residents can manage. A climate fountain has already been installed on the square on Bernadottelaan. The municipality also plans improvements at the Bernadottelaan/Beneluxlaan and Beneluxlaan/Struyckenlaan junctions.

The designs include mixed lanes shared by cyclists and cars. These are 4 to 4.8 metres wide, increasing to 5.8 metres on sections used by trucks and buses. Parking will be permitted only in marked spaces.

Where the work stands

The municipality divides the work into colour-coded phases. The green sections are complete: parts of Rooseveltlaan and Bernadottelaan, and Marshalllaan. The yellow sections still being completed are phase 4 of Trumanlaan and phase 5 of Bernadottelaan.

The red sections will be finished later. They cover part of Rooseveltlaan, Nansenlaan, Bevinlaan, De Gasperilaan and part of Trumanlaan. The municipality says the underground situation differed from what could be seen beforehand, with cables and pipes in unexpected positions, so the designs must be revised.

The project page says the municipality is examining whether the remaining work can be included in the related Van Heuven Goedhartlaan renewal. Its planning section groups the red sections with that project, which is still in the design phase, but gives no new completion dates.

What residents can expect

Homes remain accessible during construction, although detours may be needed. Work takes place Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 17:00, and the municipality provides an information app and signposted detours. Residents with questions can email bernadottelaanbevinlaan@utrecht.nl or call 14 030.

The September or October completion estimate applies only to the yellow sections now being finished. No schedule has been published for the five red sections.
