Four weekends of resurfacing will restrict traffic on Utrecht's Noordelijke Randweg Utrecht (NRU) from 19 September, with the direction of the closure changing in October. The work affects the Albert Schweitzerdreef, Karl Marxdreef and Henri Dunantplein on the northern edge of Overvecht.

The gemeente's current NRU project page says the Henri Dunantplein is already closed through 11 October. Through traffic between the Robert Kochplein and Gandhiplein remains possible outside the four resurfacing weekends, although the Albert Schweitzerdreef is less accessible while work continues.

The NRU connects the A27 to the Zuilense Ring, which in turn connects to the A2. That makes the weekend restrictions relevant not only to Overvecht residents, but also to anyone using the road as the northern link between the motorways.

Which direction closes when

On the weekends of 19–20 September and 26–27 September, the Karl Marxdreef, Henri Dunantplein and Albert Schweitzerdreef will close in the direction from Gandhiplein towards Robert Kochplein. The gemeente says the works run from Friday evening until Monday morning. Drivers will not be able to enter or leave the NRU via Einsteindreef in that direction.

For those two weekends, traffic between Albert Schweitzerdreef and Einsteindreef will be sent around via Karl Marxdreef, Gandhiplein, Franciscusdreef and Rio Brancodreef. Traffic travelling from Einsteindreef towards Maarssen or the A2 will be diverted via Carnegiedreef, Rio Brancodreef, Franciscusdreef and Gandhiplein. Drivers heading for Moldaudreef should use Darwindreef.

The direction reverses on 3–4 October and 10–11 October. The affected roads will then close from Robert Kochplein towards Gandhiplein. The published diversion sends traffic from Einsteindreef towards Maarssen or the A2 via Carnegiedreef, Rio Brancodreef, Franciscusdreef and Gandhiplein. Traffic coming from the A27 towards the A2 is directed via the A12.

Cyclists and pedestrians travelling to or from Gageldijk are directed to use either Robert Kochplein or the cycle bridge during all four weekends.

The gemeente cautions that the schedule may change if unforeseen circumstances intervene. Road users should therefore check the project page again before setting out.

One more overnight restriction

A separate operation is scheduled just before the first resurfacing weekend. According to the gemeente's project page, Rijkswaterstaat plans pruning and sawing work overnight from 16 to 17 September on the exit from the N230 to the A27.

The larger municipal programme runs from 17 August through 11 October. The gemeente says it is adding short approach lanes at the traffic lights, installing quieter asphalt, replacing traffic lights and fitting LED street lighting. The road surface between the three traffic squares will also be renewed to connect with the new Zuilense Ring.

When announcing the work in July, the gemeente said the traffic-light changes should allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross more quickly. It also said through routes towards the Zuilense Ring and A27 would be kept open as much as possible because these are busy roads. For the four resurfacing weekends, however, the practical advice is straightforward: expect signed diversions and allow extra travel time.
