Monicabrug in central Utrecht is undergoing a notable maintenance operation this summer. To carry out necessary maintenance and achieve a definitive solution for noise nuisance caused by the bridge clattering, the bridge will be lifted from its supports by a crane and temporarily moved to a nearby location during the weekend of 1 and 2 August. Depending on the progress of the work, Monicabrug will be put back on 21, 22, or 23 August.

This is the first time Monicabrug has been lifted and removed. The bridge will be closed to all traffic for 4 weeks in August so that the necessary maintenance and the solution to the clattering can be carried out at once. Traffic will be diverted during this period.

Waterway traffic will experience disruption while the bridge is removed and put back, but can pass outside these days. Monicabrug is part of a busy through road, St Jacobsstraat, in Utrecht city centre. The municipality is scheduling the work during the quieter summer months to limit disruption to the surrounding area as much as possible.

After more than 25 years, the bridge is due for maintenance. The asphalt and bridge railings will be addressed, among other things. Parts will also be cleaned and sanded, and the bridge will receive a new protective coating.

In addition, the bridge will be painted. After this work, Monicabrug will be usable for years again. Residents have experienced nuisance from the bridge clattering when heavy traffic drives over it for a long time.

Together with a specialized consultancy, Gemeente Utrecht developed a definitive solution. Heavy clamp constructions will be installed at four locations around the blue girder on the underside of the bridge. This girder connects the fixed part of the bridge with the removable part.

The measure is intended to prevent the bridge from clattering and thereby reduce the resulting noise nuisance. Residents, entrepreneurs, carriers, and other bridge users have been informed about the work. During the work, updates are available through the BouwApp, project Monicabrug Utrecht.
