This summer, work begins on the Noordelijke Randweg Utrecht
The municipality of Utrecht will begin maintenance this summer on the Noordelijke Randweg Utrecht (NRU).

The municipality of Utrecht will begin maintenance this summer on the Noordelijke Randweg Utrecht (NRU). A new type of asphalt will be applied on Henri Dunantplein, Albert Schweitzerdreef, and Karl Marxdreef, reducing traffic noise for the surrounding area. Traffic lights will also be adjusted at the junction with Moldaudreef and on Henri Dunantplein, improving the flow of all traffic.
Because these are busy roads, the through roads on the NRU toward the Zuilense Ring (N230) and the A27 will remain open to traffic as much as possible. If a section of road is temporarily closed, traffic diversions will be established and targeted communication will take place with local residents and road users to limit disruption as much as possible. The work will take place in phases.
No work will be carried out on these roads between 25 July and 16 August. All work on the NRU will be completed by mid-October 2026. In addition to replacing the asphalt, energy-efficient LED lamps will be installed in the streetlights.
The traffic lights will also be adjusted so cyclists and pedestrians can cross the road more quickly. For this purpose, the municipality will redesign Henri Dunantplein. The municipality will also create a wadi, a lowered green area, at this traffic circle.
This will allow rainwater to easily enter the soil and prevent water nuisance. In autumn 2024, the municipality carried out maintenance on Robert Kochplein and Gandhiplein on the Noordelijke Randweg Utrecht. Quieter asphalt was installed, the traffic control systems were replaced, and markings and signs were adjusted where necessary.
Once the upcoming work is completed, all maintenance on the NRU will provisionally be finished. At the Moldaudreef and Albert Schweitzerdreef junction, the municipality will replace the traffic control system from 13 through 24 July. From 20 July, the exit to and from Moldaudreef will be closed to cars.
Bicycle and pedestrian crossings will also be closed. Road users should follow the diversions and allow extra travel time. From 17 August through 11 October, the municipality will work on Henri Dunantplein, Albert Schweitzerdreef, and Karl Marxdreef.
The carriageways on Henri Dunantplein itself will be closed during this period. Through traffic on Albert Schweitzerdreef and Karl Marxdreef will remain possible. Extra traffic disruption is expected during asphalt work on four weekends: 19-20 and 26-27 September, with a closure toward Robert Kochplein; and 3-4 and 10-11 October, with a closure toward Gandhiplein.
Diversions will apply during these weekends. Once the work begins, the municipality will inform road users, residents, and local businesses in good time about the precise closures and diversions. More information is available at www.utrecht.nl/nru.
