Utrecht backs 17 makers and cultural initiatives with two-year subsidies for 2027–2028

The city has chosen which artists and cultural initiatives get its two-year culture subsidy, with demand far outstripping the money available.

The municipality of Utrecht has decided which makers and cultural initiatives will receive its two-year culture subsidy for 2027 and 2028. According to a gemeente announcement dated 15 October 2026, the city executive (the college of mayor and aldermen) supports seventeen of them.

Who is on the list

The gemeente names the following recipients: Jeugdtheater Utrecht (Podium Sprits), Matrose, VUUUR / House of Hip Hop, Queer Culture Foundation, PAKS, Stranded FM, Dutch Harp Festival, BAK Basecamp, Kloof, Innovation Lab, Shifft, Frisse Oren, Bevordering Utrechtse Improvisatie (BUI), Stadsklooster Utrecht, Compagnie Red Yellow & Blue, Zenith Utrecht and Studio Camera.

Far more requests than money

The scheme is aimed at talented makers and cultural initiatives that strengthen Utrecht's cultural offer, and it covers two years. Interest was high, and the gemeente says the number of applicants rose again. Applicants asked for €4,746,412 in total for 2027–2028, against €1,973,000 available, so requests were roughly 2.4 times the budget. Of 41 applications submitted, 38 were taken into consideration.

An independent advisory committee of experts from the cultural field, chaired by Angelique Spaninks, assessed the applications. The gemeente says it looked at artistic and business quality as well as significance for the city, and at whether an application contributes to Utrecht's cultural sector. The college adopted the committee's report in full. The full advisory report is linked from the announcement. According to the gemeente, the scheme supports both established quality and new art forms and initiatives across the city.

What the alderman said

Alderman for Culture Afke Groen called art and culture "the heart of our city" and said the subsidies give makers room to try out new ideas and reach their regular and new audiences.

She also acknowledged the other side. Some musicians, theatre makers and visual artists received nothing, she said, because demand was more than double the available funds: "we had to make choices. That was incredibly difficult."
