Utrecht starts Kaatstraat and Adelaarstraat rebuild on 26 October
Work starts on 26 October and runs in three phases through August 2027, adding greenery, bike parking and new drainage while changing bus stops and routes.

Work on Kaatstraat, Adelaarstraat and the Stenen Brug begins on 26 October, starting the next construction stage of Utrecht's Fietsroute om de Noord. The municipality plans three phases and expects this part of the project to finish in August 2027.
What the route is
The Fietsroute om de Noord is intended to create a recognisable and comfortable cycle route north of the city centre, between the Amsterdamsestraatweg and Biltstraat. The project now under preparation covers Herenweg, Kaatstraat, Adelaarstraat, Johannes de Bekastraat, Van 's-Gravesandestraat and Menno van Coehoornstraat, between the Amsterdamsestraatweg and Griftpark.
The municipality says the wider route should spread cycle traffic across the city and improve access to homes and workplaces. The junction from Oudenoord into Kaatstraat was already changed in early 2023, when most cars were barred from turning into Kaatstraat while buses, emergency vehicles and cyclists retained access.
What changes on Kaatstraat and Adelaarstraat
The reconstruction adds trees and other greenery, more bicycle parking and raised traffic-calming platforms. The municipality will renew the sewer and install a separate drain for rainwater. Eligible ground-floor homes can also receive free facade gardens, which residents must maintain.
The 30 km/h limit is not being introduced by this construction project. The municipality says it lowered the maximum speed on Kaatstraat and Adelaarstraat in summer 2026. The new layout is intended to support that lower speed.
Bus stops and diversions
The Adelaarstraat stop will be removed permanently. The outbound Willem van Noortstraat stop will move close to the stop serving the opposite direction and will not have a shelter. According to the municipality, the province made the decision on advice from operator Transdev and in consultation with the city.
During construction, bus line 1 will take a different route. The Adelaarstraat, Willem van Noortstraat and Willem van Noortplein stops will be unavailable until August 2027. Travellers should check U-OV for current information.
First phase and access
The first phase runs from 26 October to 11 December 2026 and covers Kaatstraat and the Stenen Brug, from the Oudenoord junction through the crossing with Bemuurde Weerd Oostzijde to Adelaarstraat number 14.
Kaatstraat will be closed to cars, bicycles and buses during this phase. Pedestrians can usually pass the works, but the Stenen Brug is also due to close to pedestrians from 9 to 22 November. The municipality has published separate diversion routes for local and through traffic.
