The maximum speed on about 270 streets was reduced from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour during the night of 9 to 10 July. This applies to all streets where cars and cyclists share the roadway. The municipality of Utrecht says the speed reduction is a major step toward safer traffic for all road users.

On roads shared by cars and cyclists, a lower speed gives drivers more time to react, shortens braking distance, and often makes accidents less serious. One clear speed limit also causes less confusion in residential neighborhoods and business parks, where there is often still a mix of 30 and 50 kilometer roads. Lower speeds help motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians travel more safely and reduce the likelihood of serious accidents. Lower speeds also produce less noise pollution and contribute to a more pleasant living environment for residents. The maximum speed remains 50 kilometers per hour on important through roads, including the Einsteindreef, Beneluxlaan, and Vleutensebaan.

The new speed limit was introduced all at once in one night. The affected streets are marked with 30 km zone signs. The municipality will add road markings in the coming period, including 30 km symbols on the road surface, adjusted lane markings, and recognizable entrances.

On about 80 streets with separated cycle paths, the maximum speed will also be reduced to 30 kilometers per hour in the coming years during scheduled major maintenance or redesigns, because larger changes to the road layout are needed. On 10 July, the municipality marked the start of the new speed limit with a celebratory gathering. Mobility alderman Matthijs Sienot unveiled the final sign, giving all these roads the new maximum speed of 30 km/h.

Local residents also worked together on an art project called 030 gaat voor 30, and visitors experienced in a driving simulator the difference between driving at 30 and 50 kilometers per hour.
