Anyone travelling to, from or around Utrecht on Wednesday should plan for a day largely without public transport. Unions FNV and CNV have called a 24-hour national strike across trains, buses, trams and metros on September 9, and both NS and Utrecht's regional operator U-OV have confirmed what that means for the city.

NS says plainly that it will run no trains anywhere in the Netherlands that day. The only exception nationwide is the Airport Sprinter shuttle between Amsterdam Centraal, Schiphol and Hoofddorp, which will keep running four times an hour. International services through the Netherlands, including Eurostar, ICE and NightJet connections, are also cancelled for the day. NS expects to be back to a normal timetable on Thursday, September 10, but advises travellers to check its app or journey planner before setting out, since disruption can spill into the following morning.

Inside Utrecht, U-OV says service will be thinner rather than absent, and unpredictable. Tram 20, tram 22 and bus line 31 will not run at all. A shortlist of other lines — tram 21 and buses 1, 3, 8, 28, 29, 66, 73, 74, 77, 84, 122, 158 and 565 — will attempt to run at reduced frequency, but U-OV cautions that actual service on the day depends on how many staff join the strike and may change as the day goes on. Outside the city, regional bus service is expected to run at roughly half its normal frequency. Nieuwegein's Wijkbus, other neighbourhood buses and U-flex demand-responsive transport are expected to operate as usual. U-OV's own advice is to check its app or website shortly before travelling rather than rely on a fixed schedule.

The strike is not about local Utrecht transport at all — it is a national action over the Rijksoverheid's social security plans. The government has scaled back parts of its original proposal for unemployment benefit (WW) and disability insurance (WIA) for the long-term ill. FNV says the cuts that remain in the cabinet's budget are still unacceptable, and FNV and CNV say they want them dropped rather than softened. On that basis both unions kept the strike on.

For residents without a car, the practical advice from both operators is the same: assume Wednesday is a bad day to depend on public transport, build in a cycling or walking alternative where possible, and check live journey planners rather than a printed timetable before heading out.
